Computers for schools
¨Our most important charitable work in Lithuania today is to help computerize all the secondary schools in the country. I had noticed that the rural areas of Lithuania were socially and economically hardest hit. It was much more meaningful to contribute to the learning of young people from outlying areas by providing them access to modern information technology. This satisfies the innate curiosity of young people while, at the same time, gives them skills to compete better in the job market. ¨ Dr. J. P. Kazickas ¨Odyssey of Hope¨, 2002.
In 1998 with Dr. J. Kazickas' initiative a project "Computers for Lithuania" was started. Its goal was to create conditions for computer education among school children. In 2000-2007 the Kazickas Family Foundation bought computers and software for about $ 1.3 mln (4,5 mln Lithuanian litas). Almost 300 secondary schools in Lithuania received more than 1,100 computers. Students were introduced to computers, internet, For some of the children it was first such experience. Dr. J. Kazickas participated at some of such computer classrooms' openings and saw childrens' excitement
Continuing this initiative, since 2005, the KFF has been giving grants to The Secondary school students computer science contests (info in LT only).
